This is a colon; :
Colons are used all the time in writing, in any language. They are used to make a list, show something, write something specific someone said, and for times.
Of course, everyone sees the colons used for the hour. For example: 3:00. 4:00. 10:00. 12:00.
For a list, it can be like this:
I want: an ice-cream, 5 apples and a cherry.
Or like this:
I want:
- A pear.
- 3 oranges.
- 1 cauliflower.
It can also be used for something someone said. For example:
He said to his friend:
“I want to eat something good tonight.”
And, to show something someone saw. For example:
As he walked down the road, he saw: a garden full of carrots, an old plum tree, and 4 sparrows.
Colons may not be used very often, but they are a common part of writing!
